Top loader washers
The top loader design is the traditional washing machine design from the original tubs through the 1960s models. They’re extremely popular, and they include all sizes and famous brand names and the latest technology in washing machines. For consumers, they also have a really good range of prices, so you’re sure of getting a very good deal.
Top loader brands
All major manufacturers have a range of top loaders, including:

The good news for consumers is that because these are all locally supported brands, with local servicing and maintenance available anywhere in Australia. They also come with a standard 2 year basic warranty.
Sizes and capacity
There are so many different sizes and models you need to be patient checking them out. There’s a good side to this situation for consumers, too. The reason for the large number of different sizes is that people have to manage space and cost, so the range of sizes is excellent. The product spectrum ranges in kilograms from the little 5.5kg washers up through to the big 10kg models which can wash a full family load in one wash.
Models
The models compete with each other for features, and each brand has a different approach.
- Daewoo have a twin tub washer, a classic design which other brands don’t have.
- LG uses a standard programmable control for its washers. Simpson has a traditional design pattern and a simple control format.
- Electrolux washers have their own proprietary features.
- Maytag commercial washers have a list of special features as long as your arm, including a “most efficient, best cleaning” program.

Buying top loaders
You’re likely to get spoiled for choice with so many models to choose from, so start by thinking “size” to track down your new washer. Also look a size up, to see if you can get a bit extra for a similar price.
Remember to ask about package deals and discounts. This is an extremely competitive business, and you’ll be surprised at the kinds of discounts and deals you can get. Some will save you hundreds of dollars upfront.
