Bottom Freezer Fridges
Bottom freezer fridges are a design option which has become a lot more popular recently as the demand for more capacity for freezer space has increased. These fridges are basically hybrid fridge/freezers. They’re also very well organized for food storage.
The bottom storage idea means no more trying to fit the food into the usually limited space in conventional fridges. These fridges typically have drawers in the freezer compartment, and they’re easier to use than the old freezer style which wasn’t really designed for this type of use.
Most of the top brands have at least one bottom freezer model. The Electrolux types are good examples:
- 510 litres
- 151 litres freezer space
- Drawer system freezer shelving (also called “telescopic freezer bins”)
The emphasis is on providing a lot of space in a simpler form, which is good for consumers, and better design in terms of storage space. The drawers are also good organizers, providing separation of food types.
Bottom freezer fridges are usually otherwise conventional designs, with the upper fridge space made more accessible. This configuration means that the upper space is also simplified, and the fridge shelving is at roughly waist height.
Interestingly, one of the common selling points for the bottom freezer fridges is energy efficiency. All of them rate well, and the average 450kWh per year for a 3 star rated fridge is very good. (By comparison, that’s roughly what a convection heater uses in winter in about 2 months.) For a type of fridge which has so much extra freezer space, it’s good value.
It’s worth checking out the bottom freezers for both design and space. They’re a better choice in many ways if you regularly need a lot of freezer space and don’t want to go to the extent of buying a full freezer unit.
